The Four Heavenly Kings - in Buddhism - are four guardian gods, each of whom protects one of the four cardinal directions. Each of the kings represents one phenomenon: Rain, Harmony, Wind and Prosperity, and one side of the world. It is believed that they control the climate and weather. Two of the kings have friendly faces, so-called "light", two of the kings have fierce faces, "dark". This duality symbolizes that goodness is achieved by both softness and hardness.
Mo-li Shu is the guardian of the north, is considered the defender of peace and the giver of wealth. He is depicted holding a magic umbrella, which, during his battles with the forces of evil, causes natural disasters.
Mo-li Qing is the guardian of the East. He has a bearded face. He destroys the machinations of evil spirits and demons with the help of his stringed musical instrument, which he always carries with him.
Mo-li Hong is the guardian of the south, he has a magic sword in his hands. He is a defender against demons who suck the life force out of humanity.
Mo-li Hai is a guardian of the west, with bulging eyes. Because of his outstanding vision, he is known as "Three-Eyed", or "Wide-eyed". He embodies knowledge and caution. He has a snake in one hand and a pearl in the other.
